Government Grants and Funding for poultry projects
|Government funded poultry house|
Government provides money to the provincial departments for funding. You would need to approach the department in your province to apply for funding. Ask for CUSP application forms. These are the grant application forms for agriculture - you would need to specify poultry funding or chicken funding. Below are some useful phone numbers and addresses. When you prepare you business plan make sure you include everything you need - for the current project and for future growth - people often forget about leveling the ground, concrete slabs, fans and many other items of poultry equipment. Think about silos or storage for your chicken feed - egg weighers if you are applying for a layer house grant. If you are trying for a grant you will need to form a co-operative - this means 8 or 9 people - and this brings along with it all of it's own problems when trying to manage a chicken farm.

Government grants are easily available - make sure your business plan is detailed and lists everything you will need. Look for markets close to your chicken farm - decide whether you will be selling directly to the public or to a slaughter house. South Africa agriculture is actively looking for emerging farmers. Grants and loans for chicken farming come through government. You will need to apply for grants for poultry houses through your local department of Agriculture and land affairs. If you are in Limpopo province the best will be to contact LIBSA - they are very good with previously disadvantaged people and will help you with cash flows, projections and your poultry business plan. If you know of any one else let us know - trying to keep track of all the players in the business is a real mission. Try and rate the suppliers for us so we can help others. All of these organisations will require business plans and some will help you - others will not. If you can find someone who has gone through the process - then ask them to help - they will know the ins and outs and what to watch out for. Try and not use a middle man - they tend to take a fair portion of the loan for themselves, in saying that, if it is your first time it may be worth it - just discuss costs first. It will help if you have some poultry experience - even if you are only farming with a few chickens - this adds to your points - and if you are applying for a loan or grant to expand your farm instead of starting a new farm this will also help.
